The speed and teamwork, combined with a strong understanding of the new rules enabled the Roley 12s a fantastic and sizeable victory last Saturday at Medina Oval against Kwinana. Speaking of sizeable, the Roley boys were all talk pre game about the mountainous size of one of the Kwinana boys. However they were reminded that football is a team game and that there is no assumptions to be made in football; it all unfolds on the ground.
The first quarter was under way with Fraser attempting to make some sort of contest against the opposition ruckman and the midfield of Spanjers, Batley and Myall-Brown were well organised and won the ball out of the middle consistenly. Matters were helped with 4 free kicks at the centre bounce with the Kwinana boys unaware of the limit of 4 players in the centre square at bounce downs. The injection of Burrows and Hanna from the bench saw the forward line light up with 1 from Burrows and 2 from Hanna. Trent McDonnell relished the massive open spaces and ran the wing well to also kick a goal. A first quarter of 5.1 to 0.0 was an outstanding start.
The second quarter was an opportunity for some of the backline to come up into the play with the midfielders rotating off the bench. Hanna stepped up with another goal as did Burrows and McDonnell. Myall-Brown had the midfield organised and disciplined as they sat back across half forward and kept the ball locked in. To Kwinana's credit they went forward with a great passage of team play to kick their only goal for the game.
The second half was an opportunity for a couple of the backmen to get into the forward line with Walker-Lewsey and Nairn snagging a goal each, along with O'Neill's second for the game, a Morfitt running goal and Fraser's under and over bouncing ball which eluded traffic to gain maximum points was novel. There were several run and bounces from the likes of McDonnell, Morfitt and Newland, as they eluded opponents and pushed Roley forward. McDonnell's 3/4 oval run and handball link up with team mates and to finish with a goal was the team and individual highlight of the day.
The pressure and tackling throughout the game was intense and effective. Hutton was outstanding in this department off half forward with Newman, Myall-Brown, Burrows, Sweetapple and Fraser prepared to put their bodies on the line against larger opponents.
Fitness and speed were a stand out and each player was aware of their role. A truly allround performance boys with parents and coaches brimming with pride at the progress of these boys throughout what has been a disjointed season. With just two games to go a positive end to the season would be just rewards for everyone's effort.
Due to a pending holidasy Riley Griffiths played his final game for the season and next week we farewell from our club Kye Sweetapple as his family move on to new adventures in another part of the state.
